The Pilanesberg is a circular range of hills that is the remnant of a once mighty volcano - one of only three such formations in the world.

Within its radiating valleys and hills, a park was created in 1979, covering over 50 000 ha. Today, Pilanesberg is home to a huge variety of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo), cheetah, brown hyena, wild dog, giraffe, zebra and hippo. You can be guaranteed good sightings of white rhino and elephant, sometimes lions, and if you are lucky, the elusive leopard. This is the best wildlife viewing destination within easy reach of Johannesburg. An added advantage is that it is malaria-free.
